How to Get to Barra de la Cruz
Jun 2026 · 5 min read

Barra de la Cruz is a small Zapotec village off the Mex 200 highway on the coast of Oaxaca. It's remote — that's the point — but it's easier to reach than you'd think. Almost everyone comes through Huatulco.
Fly into Huatulco (HUX)
Huatulco International Airport (HUX) is the closest airport — about 28 miles (45 minutes by car) from Barra. It has direct flights from Mexico City year-round and seasonal connections from the US and Canada. From Mexico City the hop is roughly an hour.
From the airport to Barra
- Taxi: the simplest option — roughly $20 USD (about 350–450 MXN), 45 minutes door to door.
- Rental car: from ~$25 USD/day in Huatulco. Handy for exploring the coast on flat days.
- Collectivo: the budget route, ~50 MXN. Drops you on the highway, then a 20-minute walk into town.
- Private transfer: we can arrange a driver to meet your flight — just ask on WhatsApp.
Driving in
Head east on the Mex 200 toward Salina Cruz and take the signed Barra de la Cruz turnoff. The last stretch into town and down toward the point is a dirt road — fine for a normal car in the dry season; take it slow after heavy rain.
Cash, fuel & groceries
There's no ATM in Barra and most places are cash-only, so pull pesos in Huatulco before you drive in. Fill the tank and grab groceries there too — the bungalows have full kitchens, and it's the last proper supermarket on the way.
